Deoria (UP), Jun 17 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday spoke to the brother of sailor Shivanand Chaurasia, who died in an attack on merchant ships from the US military off the coast of Oman, and assured all possible help to the grieving family, party leaders said.

During the conversation, Gandhi conveyed his deep sympathies to Ram Pravesh Chaurasia, the brother of the deceased seafarer, they said.

He said the tragic incident had caused pain across the country and that the Congress party stood firmly with the grieving family.

He assured the family of all possible support during the difficult time. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha told the family that efforts would be made to help them secure justice and address the issues arising from the incident.

The conversation took place on Youth Congress leader Priyesh Pandey’s mobile phone.

The family members briefed Gandhi about the circumstances surrounding Shivanand’s death.

Paying tributes to the sailor, the Congress leader said the country would always remember his sacrifice, according to party leaders.

Earlier, former UP Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu visited Surauli, the ancestral village of the sailor, and met family members to offer condolences.

The family demanded that Shivanand Chaurasia be accorded martyr status, provided financial assistance of Rs 1 crore, and that one family member be given a government job.

They also sought waiver of the loan taken by Chaurasia for employment-related purposes. PTI CORR ABN MAN RT RT
