Chandigarh, Aug 28 (PTI) Punjab Police has busted two separate smuggling modules involved in the trafficking of weapons and narcotics and arrested six people, the state’s police chief said on Friday.
In a post on X, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said police recovered nearly three kilograms of heroin and eight pistols from the accused. “In a major breakthrough, State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), Amritsar and Counter Intelligence (CI), Amritsar, in two separate operations, bust weapons and narcotics smuggling modules, apprehend 6 accused, and recovers 2.920 kg of heroin along with 8 high-end pistols,” Yadav said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were involved in cross-border smuggling and received weapons and narcotics via drones for further distribution among criminal elements in Punjab, he said. The DGP said separate First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered at the State Special Operation Cell Police Station in Amritsar.
Further investigation is underway to establish the forward and backward linkages and identify all persons associated with the cross-border network, he said.
Police identified the arrested as Inderpal Singh and Sikandarjit Singh, both residents of village Bhindi Aulakh in Amritsar; Happy Singh alias Veerpal Singh, a resident of Kakkar in Amritsar; Sunil Masih and Rajan Masih, both residents of Mahal in Gurdaspur; and Pardeep Singh, a resident of Noorpur in Amritsar.
Police teams also impounded their car and motorcycle used for smuggling activities, according to an official statement.
Sharing details of the first operation, Additional IG Sukhminder Singh Mann said CI Amritsar teams received reliable input that suspects Sunil and Rajan had received a large consignment of illegal pistols and were expected to deliver them to their associate, Pardeep Singh, in village Nurpur in Amritsar.
Acting swiftly, police teams intercepted the trio and recovered seven pistols from them, he said.
In another operation, he said teams from SSOC Amritsar apprehended Inderpal, Sikanderjit and Happy Singh after recovering 2.9 kilograms of heroin and one pistol from them. Sukhminder Mann said more arrests and recoveries are likely in the coming days. PTI SUN ASD ASD
