Chandigarh, Oct 10 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann slammed the BJP-led Centre on Saturday over the detention of several protesters ahead of a proposed demonstration by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

“Around 80,000 to 90,000 security personnel have been deployed. They (the protesters) are students, they are unarmed. They came for democracy that their votes should not be deleted.

“Through the SIR, votes were deleted but favourite votes were retained. This matter has come to light. Two members of the Election Commission have also stated that they were not asked (about decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll). It is an alarm bell for democracy,” Mann said here, responding to a reporter’s question on the CJP’s proposed protest.

“If students are coming forward to save democracy, if Gen-Z is coming forward, they should be allowed. Why are they (Centre)) scared of Jantar Mantar now?” he asked.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader also asserted that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar must resign.

“Entire Delhi has been turned into a fortress,” he said on the heavy deployment of security personnel in the national capital in view of the proposed CJI stir.

The Delhi Police on Saturday detained around 500 protesters, who were trying to reach Jantar Mantar for the proposed CJP agitation against the CEC.

Police denied permission to the CJP to hold its demonstration at Jantar Mantar, citing security considerations and procedural requirements.

The CJP has given the protest call against Kumar over allegations of voter-list manipulation during the SIR and changes relating to Form 6, used for voter registration. PTI CHS VSD RC

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
