Hoshiarpur (Punjab ), May 22 (PTI) Eight people, including seven children, were injured when a tipper truck collided with a school van in Hoshiarpur district on Friday, police said.
The accident occurred around 1 pm near Kadiana village on the Dosarka-Sham Chaurasi road. A van from Sun Valley International School, Chakkowal Brahmana, was transporting approximately 10 children towards Sham Chaurasi when it was allegedly struck from the side by a tipper truck coming from the opposite direction.
The tipper, allegedly due to overspeeding, veered off the road and came to a halt in nearby fields.
The van was being driven by Kulwant Singh (42), a resident of Kadiana village, who was also injured in the accident, police said.
Initially, all injured schoolchildren and the driver were admitted to the Community Health Centre in Sham Chaurasi for treatment.
Four children, aged between 4 and 13, along with the driver, who suffered serious injuries, were later referred to the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur, officials said.
Three other children, who had minor injuries, received first aid and were discharged.
Punjab Minister Ravjot Singh also visited the health facility to inquire about the condition of the injured students.
Bullowal Police Station Station House Officer Sub-Inspector Parwinderjit Singh stated that action would be taken as per law, and an inquiry into the incident was underway.
Later, residents of the area, along with activists from the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Qadian), led by its state committee member Satpal Singh, staged a protest and blocked traffic on the Dosarka-Sham Chaurasi road near the accident site for about an hour, demanding a ban on the movement of tippers on the route.
Sub-Inspector Parwinder Singh arrived at the scene and persuaded the protesters to lift the blockade, assuring them that the issue would be discussed with higher authorities.
Following this assurance, the protesters ended the demonstration, and traffic resumed. PTI COR SUN MPL MPL
