Amaravati, Apr 15 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday directed officials to chalk out an action plan to utilise Godavari river water upon the completion of Polavaram project.

Reviewing the progress of key irrigation projects, the CM emphasised that water from Polavaram project’s right and left main canals should be efficiently channeled into reservoirs and tanks to meet irrigation and other needs.

“Naidu directed officials to prepare an action plan for utilisation of Godavari waters once the Polavaram Project is completed,” said an official press release.

The CM also reviewed the progress of Veligonda, Handri–Neeva Sujala Sravanthi, Polavaram–Nallamala Sagar Link, Chintalapudi Lift Irrigation Scheme, Varikapudiselu and North Andhra projects.

Also, he reviewed initiatives aimed at groundwater augmentation, Jaladhara and Jal Harathi programmes.

Naidu instructed officials to accelerate works on North Andhra projects such as Tharakarama, Mahendratanaya, Thotapalli Barrage, Maddulavalasa, Janjavathi, and Hiramandalam Lift schemes.

He set deadlines for interlinking rivers Vamsadhara–Nagavali by December and Nagavali–Champavathi by July, said the press release.

With the clearance of obstacles, the TDP supremo said that tenders for prestigious Neradi Barrage on the Vamsadhara River in Srikakulam district be floated at the earliest.

Further, he proposed developing the Polavaram Project as a major tourist destination with hotels and shopping areas, along with the beautification of surrounding regions.

Naidu set a June deadline for the completion of Veligonda stage-1 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,042 crore.

Officials reported that 52 TMC of Srisailam backwaters have already been diverted to Rayalaseema through Malyala Lift.

According to the CM, the government’s efforts have enhanced groundwater availability to reach 625 TMC as of April 1, among other achievements. PTI STH ROH
