Madhubani(Bihar), Aug 15 (PTI) Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor on Saturday met Madhubani SSP in connection with the death of a man in Rampatti jail in the district, an official said.
Nineteen-year-old Roshan Yadav allegedly hanged himself inside the jail on Monday. However, his family members questioned the police claim and alleged that he may have been killed, pointing to several marks found on his body.
Yadav had been lodged in the jail since May 27 in connection with an Arms Act case registered against him, though he was briefly released late May before being re-arrested within hours, officials said.
“The SSP has agreed to investigate every angle of the case thoroughly within 10 days, and ensure justice for the deceased’s family members. If appropriate action is not taken within the stipulated timeline, we will take the matter forward to the DGP and the Chief Secretary,” Kishor, the Bankipur MLA, said.
The SSP has assured me that the man’s death will be investigated by the District Magistrate (DM) following NHRC guidelines, he added.
“However, the larger issue is why was the arrest made by Rahika police? Why was no written intimation given to the kin? Why was he detained without being produced before a magistrate in court? And why was he allegedly beaten and tortured?,” the Jan Suraaj leader said.
The family earlier submitted applications to the police station and the SP, seeking action against the jail administration and an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Yadav’s death, officials said.
Yadav’s mother and sister had met him at Rampatti jail on August 8 and claimed that he appeared normal.
With the deceased’s mother and sisters by his side, Kishor said that the boy was from a very poor background, and that the case should be fast-tracked on humanitarian grounds.
“The boy’s father had died in a train accident, and it was his elder sister who performed the last rites,” he said. PTI CORR SUK RG
