Bengaluru, Jun 19 (PTI) A Bengaluru police inspector has come under the scanner for his alleged role in a Rs 20 lakh robbery case after a gang posing as police officials targeted a group staying at a hotel here, police said on Friday.
The incident occurred on Thursday when two youth from, who were reportedly carrying Rs 20 lakh, were staying at a hotel in Madiwala here.
According to the police, a group of individuals claiming to be police officers showed ID cards, questioned the youths about the source of the money, alleging that they were involved in money trading.
The suspects then demanded that the money be handed over to them and fled the spot with the amount.
The suspects had allegedly come in a jeep that was parked outside the hotel. They allegedly escaped in the same vehicle.
Upon realising that they were duped, the victims lodged a complaint with the Madiwala police station.
The investigation subsequently led to the arrest of one of the accused, who during interrogation disclosed the involvement of an inspector-rank officer, and claimed that the inspector dropped the men near the hotel in Madiwala and remained seated in the jeep at the time of the incident.
Since the arrest of the accused, the inspector, who is attached to the CID, has reportedly been absconding.
Speaking to reporters, Bengaluru Police Commissioner said, “They (suspects) were private individuals. They went to the hotel claiming to be police officers. However, based on other information that has emerged, we are receiving inputs that another person—an officer of inspector rank—may also have been involved in the incident. We are investigating on that basis.” “We have seized the vehicle used in the crime. We are investigating who the accused were and the identities of all the individuals involved,” he said.
The Commissioner said preliminary indications suggest that several people appear to be involved in this case. Once everyone is apprehended, all the facts will become clear.
“The full amount has been recovered, and some of the accused have also been apprehended. Our teams have been sent to different locations to trace the remaining suspects,” he added.
Singh said the police were investigating every aspect of the case, including who masterminded and executed the crime. PTI AMP ROH
