Thane, Oct 17 (PTI) A heavy reinforcement cage of an under-construction pier toppled from the Anand Nagar-Saket elevated road project site in Thane onto a moving car below on Saturday, officials said.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The MMRDA has levied a Rs 2 crore penalty on the executing contractor for severe safety lapses following the incident, according to a statement.

A pier reinforcement cage is a cylindrical or rectangular steel framework made of vertical rebar wrapped and tied with horizontal rings, ties, or spirals.

The damaged car was promptly removed from the scene, and crews utilised a crane to safely clear the toppled steel cage from the roadway, the MMRDA said.

An investigation has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the incident and establish accountability.

“MMRDA views this incident with utmost seriousness. Such incidents are unacceptable, and any lapse in construction safety will not be tolerated. Public safety remains MMRDA’s highest priority, and strict accountability will be ensured at every project site,” the statement said.
