Thrissur (Keralam), Sep 11 (PTI) Animal rights organisation PETA India has partnered with KEPA to sensitise police personnel on laws and procedures to combat cruelty to animals, the organisation said on Friday.
Nearly 100 police personnel, including over 70 cadet sub-inspectors undergoing one-year training at Kerala Police Academy (KEPA), participated in the four-hour workshop held at the Academy here on Wednesday.
The workshop covered provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, as amended in 2022, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and other relevant laws, PETA India said in a statement.
Serving assistant sub-inspectors, sub-inspectors, inspectors and a deputy superintendent of police posted at KEPA also attended the programme.
The initiative was held under the leadership of ADGP H Venkatesh and Inspector General of Police K Sethu Raman, who is also the Director of KEPA, it said.
“Police play a crucial role in ensuring that cruelty to animals is addressed and prevented,” said Meet Ashar, PETA India’s Legal Advisor and Director of Cruelty Response.
PETA India said the National Crime Records Bureau had, for the first time, tracked cases of cruelty against animals and recorded 9,039 cases and the arrest of 10,312 persons in 2024.
It also cited a 2021 report by the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations which said nearly five lakh animals had been victims of crimes in the preceding decade.
PETA India said it has been conducting similar sensitisation workshops for law enforcement personnel in various parts of the country as part of its efforts to ensure that crimes against animals are addressed seriously. PTI LGK KH
