New Delhi, September 30 (PTI) The Delhi Police has arrested a cab driver and a jeweller in connection with the alleged theft of a passenger’s handbag containing a smartphone, gold rings, cash and other valuables, officials said on Wednesday.
Police identified the accused as cab driver Amit Sharma (38), a Shahdara resident, and jeweller Ajay Kapoor (47), a Krishna Nagar resident. According to police, the incident occurred on September 22 when the complainant, Neetu Arora, hired a cab from a mall in Shahdara to another in Preet Vihar.
Police said after crossing the Nirman Vihar red light, she briefly stepped out of the vehicle between 6.30 pm and 7 pm to buy some items, leaving her handbag inside the cab.
Taking advantage of the situation, Sharma allegedly drove away with the handbag containing the mobile phone, two gold rings, cash, a branded watch and other belongings, they said.
After the complaint was filed, police registered an e-FIR and launched an investigation, analysing CCTV footage from Vikas Marg, Nirman Vihar, and adjoining routes to establish the cab’s escape route.
Technical surveillance helped identify the vehicle and Sharma, who was subsequently apprehended near Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, they said. During interrogation, Sharma allegedly disclosed that he had sold the stolen gold rings to Kapoor for Rs 95,000.
