Nashik, May 27 (PTI) Four persons, including a couple and two teenagers, drowned in a dam during a picnic in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at the Kashyapi dam on Tuesday evening, they said.
According to police, Sachin Kailas Thombre (30), a resident of Makhamalabad, and his wife Rohini (25) had gone to the reservoir along with their two-year-old daughter and two boys from their neighbourhood, Ketan Anil Pawar (16) and Kaushal Anil Pawar (14).
The dam in Nashik taluka has been constructed on the Kashyapi river, a tributary of the Godavari.
It was not clear how the couple and the two teenagers lost their lives in the water body.
Police said a woman named Sangita Ghadge, who was passing by, saw the child moving towards the reservoir. She rushed to the spot and rescued her. The girl kept crying, ‘Mummy, Pappa,’ while pointing towards the water, officials said.
After spotting pairs of footwear on the bank, Ghadge alerted local residents, who later pulled out the bodies of the Thombre couple and the boys.
Police said the deceased were identified after an incoming call was received on Rohini’s mobile phone. Officials later found that Rohini was pregnant.
A case of accidental death has been registered at the Harsul police station and further investigations are on, they added. PTI COR NR
