Hyderabad, Jul 1 (PTI) Doctors at the state-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) here have performed a multivisceral transplant, involving five organs—the stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small intestine, and right colon— on a single patient.
The Telangana health department on Wednesday termed the procedure as a “historic milestone” in Indian healthcare and claimed it to be the first in the country.
“Doctors at Osmania General Hospital, Hyderabad have successfully performed India’s first Multi-Visceral Transplant,” it said in a release.
The 36-hour marathon surgery was carried out on a 30-year-old engineer from Sircilla, about 140 kms from Hyderabad, suffering from a rare and life-threatening condition, it said.
Praising the doctors. state Health Minister C Damodar Rajanarasimha said the multi-visceral transplant enhanced the reputation of Telangana public health system.
