Oppn will pay for ‘betrayal’ at every ballot: Goyal on Constitution Amendment Bill defeat in LS

New Delhi, Apr 17 (PTI) Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said that opposition parties, including Congress, TMC, DMK, and Samajwadi Party, came together not to debate, but to block the passage of the Constitution Amendment Bill for the women’s reservation law.

He said a bill that sought to guarantee 33 per cent reservation for women was not just rejected, but shockingly celebrated with victory slogans.

The political cost of this “betrayal” will be paid, not just in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, but at every ballot across Bharat, he said.

A Constitution Amendment Bill to implement reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of seats of the Lok Sabha was defeated on Friday in the Lower House.

“Today, a deeply disturbing and disgraceful scene unfolded in the Lok Sabha. The Congress, TMC, DMK, Samajwadi Party, and the INDI Alliance came together not to debate, but to block the passage of a crucial Constitution Amendment Bill for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,” Goyal said in a post on social media.

By stalling this bill, he said, they have denied women their rightful representation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

“This is not an isolated act. It is a pattern. A pattern of resisting empowerment, fearing change, and placing political insecurity above national progress,” the commerce and industry minister said.

This insult to our Nari Shakti will neither be forgotten nor forgiven, he added.

“It will travel far and wide, echoing across every constituency, every state, and every election. The women of India will remember who stood with them and who stood against them,” the minister said. PTI RR BAL AMJ AMJ
