Thane, May 23 (PTI) Opium worth Rs 70 lakh and a country-made pistol were seized from an SUV after it crashed into a traffic island in Navi Mumbai, police said on Saturday.
The SUV driver abandoned the mangled Rajasthan-registered vehicle on Palm Beach Road and fled the scene following the crash that occurred around 4.30 am on Friday, Inspector (Crime) Bhaskar Kokare said.
“Our team noticed a pungent smell coming from the vehicle and discovered three plastic sacks containing 69 kg of opium in the boot. They also found a loaded country-made pistol on the dashboard,” he said.
A case has been registered against the unidentified driver under the NDPS Act, the Arms Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the Motor Vehicle Act, the official added. PTI COR ARU
