New Delhi: Only 14 per cent Indians said they will go to an AYUSH dentist for tooth extraction or root canal treatment (RCT), a LocalCircles survey has found.

The survey, published Thursday, received over 28,000 responses from across 303 districts — 67 per cent respondents were male, 33 per cent were female.

The survey comes weeks after a government notification listing 58 surgeries that Ayurveda practitioners can perform. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has been up in arms against the government move, calling it ‘mixopathy’. The IMA has also threatened to withdraw all non-essential, non-Covid services in hospitals on 11 December.

When asked if the citizens support the recent government move of allowing AYUSH practitioners to perform surgeries involving eyes, ears, throat and nose, 47 per cent supported the notification, while 43 per cent didn’t and 10 per cent said that they “can’t say”.

When the respondents were asked ‘If AYUSH doctors were to perform surgeries, what kind of antibiotics and anaesthesia should they be using’, 35 per cent said AYUSH practitioners shouldn’t be allowed to perform surgeries in the first place, 27 per cent said “let them use whatever they want to”, 20 per cent said “Ayush-based”, while 13 per cent said “Allopathy-based”.

The results indicated that 39 per cent are fine with AYUSH practitioners using allopathic antibiotics and anaesthesia for surgeries, the survey said.

48% in favour of AYUSH doctors performing surgeries

Asked if they would go to an AYUSH practitioner for a root canal treatment or dental surgery, only 14 per cent said they would go to an “AYUSH qualified or trained dentist”.

LocalCircles concluded based on their findings that while 48 per cent are in favour of AYUSH doctors being allowed to perform surgeries, only a small section are willing to go to them personally for surgeries like RCT or tooth extraction.

“This means that while for most, such a move will help the system in making more doctors available to perform surgeries, they themselves are unwilling to visit AYUSH doctors,” the survey stated.

  1. Ayurvedic doctors offcourse do well in their field……what is required is not degree but practice….if they given good training they can perform equal to allopathy……don’t think allopathy is best always …. allopathy will give you temporary, sudden treatment rqrd in sevier conditions….ayurveda takes some time …but it is fully effective wth no side effects…I wish ima should b quite …it is none of its business….

  2. Let patients may choose what is beneficial for him , why ima is so concerned , if ayush pg doctors are not eligible then the patient will not come .

  3. 14% Is great welcome from Indians ,If govt starts opponting ayush MS and MD graduates in govt sector then they will come to know the value of treatment.

  4. That is great news. It makes about 220 million people in the country. A lot of humans. I think the decision of the govt was excellent.

  5. The ground reality is that no medical degree needed in india to practice medicine.Lots of quacks are treating even doing surgeries on poor & inocent patients ,some become multi-drug resistant or multiorgan failure. Those who are making such law will not go to ayush doctors for surgery definitely.Ayush system are not recognised in other country.

  6. If this happens it will be gud for everyone except the Killer Allopathy & its Dr.s Their monopoly will end that us why they r opposing it.

  7. Y allopathic doctors don’t have trust in there pathy ,y they feel insecure from Ayush doctors .
Success and intelligence doesn’t let u be insecure ,what u have will be urs . Behave like drs not school going kids.

  8. Doctors who are trained under standard conditions, and evaluated after the training period and declared eligible to practise, perform procedures, should be allowed to practise. People should have right to choose their doctors. Make all doctors mandatorily display their Basic qualifications and speciality degrees and super speciality degrees.

  9. 14% Indians means ,it comes nearly 17 crores!!
So many are willing in this initial stage itself,Really promising and it shows Indians have an ardent faith in the great Ayurveda.

  10. Concern of IMA is not safety or availability of medical facilities but supremacy of Allopathy, to ensure maximum cash flow. Government should ensure to provide equal footing to homeo and ayush clinical process. Unfortunately, IMA has lost its way, resulting in such deterioration in medical ethics. Its very dificult to find a doctor, who works for well being of patients, and not only for money.

  11. I support Ayurveda, and they should be allowed to perform surgeries. If they did a property survey, they will get more than 50% support.

  12. As time passes, there should be an evolution of the best of both systems. There should be more research on the efficacy of ayurvedic medicines and methods in a holistic way. People should be the winners.

  13. Aayurveda ko mbbs me integrated kiya jana chahiye because all subjects is same but salary is different. India in one and best Medical system hona chahiye
