Baghpat (UP), Apr 15 (PTI) A 62-year-old employee died and five others fell seriously ill allegedly after inhaling a toxic gas that leaked at a sugar mill in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at the waste treatment plant of the Malakpur sugar mill in the Baraut area, where a sudden leak of poisonous gas led to several workers being exposed.
Police officials said six people, including security guard Suresh Sharma (62), fell unconscious after inhaling the gas.
On receiving information, police reached the spot and initiated rescue operations, but Sharma had died by then, they said.
Five other employees who were affected by the gas leak were admitted to a hospital. Of them, two — identified as Hameed and Saqib — were referred to a higher medical centre in Meerut due to their critical condition, they added.
Superintendent of Police Suraj Kumar Rai said a complaint will be taken into account and further action initiated accordingly.
“The cause of the gas leak is being investigated. At present, there is no further leakage,” he said. PTI COR KIS NB NB
