New Delhi, Apr 22 (PTI) On the eve of polling for the Tamil Nadu Assembly election, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged the people of the state to vote for the Congress-DMK alliance to protect their identity, language and rights, while assuring them that the two parties are committed to carrying their proud history of social justice forward.

Voting for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly is scheduled to take place on Thursday and the counting of votes will be taken up on May 4.

The tenure of the current Assembly in the southern state is till May 10.

“The Congress-DMK alliance has a proud history of social justice in Tamil Nadu. We are committed to carrying it forward. My message to the people of Tamil Nadu: Protect your identity, your language, your rights. Vote for the INDIA alliance. Vote for Congress,” Gandhi said in a post on X.

In a video message shared along with his post, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha said this election is an ideological fight between the Congress-DMK alliance and the BJP-AIADMK alliance.

“The BJP controls the AIADMK and they are trying to enter Tamil Nadu to destroy and attack Tamil culture, Tamil language and Tamil traditions.

“The AIADMK leadership is fully compromised by the BJP because of their corruption cases. Exactly how Trump has compromised Modi, Modi has compromised the leadership of the AIADMK and they want to rule Tamil Nadu through Delhi,” the Congress leader alleged.

“We want Tamil Nadu to be ruled by the people of Tamil Nadu, by the panchayats of Tamil Nadu, by the assembly and the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. We have a proud heritage of social justice in Tamil Nadu. Kamaraj ji laid the foundation of this social justice and the DMK-Congress alliance is continuing that social justice.

“Our government is going to provide support to women, to youngsters and to older less-abled people. Please vote for our alliance partners and for the Congress candidates,” he added.

The former Congress chief urged the party workers to help the candidates of the DMK and other alliance partners in the polls. PTI SKC RC
