Bhubaneswar, Sep 30 (PTI) A man admitted to the psychiatry department of the Odisha government-run SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack died on Wednesday, triggering a protest by his family as they alleged that security staff beat the patient with plastic pipes the previous night.
Srikanta Das of Jajpur district was admitted to the hospital on Monday, and he died early on Wednesday while undergoing treatment, officials said.
However, his family alleged that security personnel beat the man up, leading to his death. Police said they have launched an investigation after Das’s wife lodged a complaint.
“My husband was beaten with plastic pipes last night. Later they administered some injections. He died soon after,” she alleged.
The man’s brother claimed that Das had injury marks all over his body, including his head, ears, arms and legs.
Medical Superintendent of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Jyotish Chandra Choudhury, said the hospital would extend all necessary support to police investigating the allegation.
“I got information about the incident, but I don’t have the details. We will cooperate with police in the investigation,” he said.
“A patient can be restrained physically to prevent self-harm. But no one can physically assault a patient,” the medical superintendent said. PTI BBM BBM NSD
