No political interference in recruitments: Bengal CM Suvendu

Stay updated with ThePrint:

Kolkata, Nov 4 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday said there would be no political interference in recruitments, asserting that his government would not repeat the mistakes of its predecessor.

He also expressed confidence that the government would complete one lakh recruitments by May 7, 2027, saying the removal of the OBC-related hurdle had paved the way for expediting the process.

Addressing a programme where appointment letters were handed over to more than 200 newly selected cooperative inspectors, Adhikari alleged that recruitments had remained stalled under the previous government.

He said his government accepted the 2024 Calcutta High Court division bench order on OBC classification, introduced seven per cent reservation for OBCs and adopted the list approved by the National Commission for Backward Classes.

The government had also withdrawn the previous dispensation’s petition in the Supreme Court on the issue, he said.

Criticising the previous government, Adhikari said, “They brought shame to the state when the jobs of 26,000 teachers were nullified by the court over corruption.”

Adhikari said his government had tried to bring transparency to recruitments.

The CM said the recruitment bodies, including the Public Service Commission, the School Service Commission and the Police Recruitment Board, would work independently.

“The government’s role will be limited to holding job fairs and handing over the appointment letters,” he said.

The chief minister said the government had so far cleared the recruitment process for 63,496 posts, which include vacancies pending since 2024 as well as new ones. This total includes nearly 33,400 teachers. The target is to recruit one lakh people, he said.

He said around 11,000 police personnel had already been appointed, and another job fair for police sub-inspectors would be held on November 7.

Adhikari also said 8,000 crore of the pending dearness allowance dues of state government employees had been paid and the remaining 4,000 crore would be cleared in due course in line with the Supreme Court’s direction.

He said the Seventh Pay Commission report was expected within this financial year and would be implemented thereafter. PTI BSM MNB
