Agra: A bride in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, called off her wedding Saturday after discovering there was no air conditioning in her room at the venue arranged by the groom’s family—triggering a heated altercation, police intervention, and a dowry harassment complaint.
Police said the bride arrived at the venue in Shamshabad town and complained about feeling suffocated in the scorching heat. Describing it as an “unacceptable and inhuman situation”, she demanded an air conditioner be arranged.
Her demand led to a heated dispute in which the groom allegedly became abusive towards the bride and her family, police said. She then refused to go ahead with the marriage and left the mandap.
According to the police, the bride told her parents that in a house where there is no respect for her and such a basic facility could not be arranged, her life would “become hell”, and she refused to marry.
As the fight escalated, police arrived at the spot to intervene. Police station in-charge Hansraj Bhadoria said they tried to broker a compromise, but the bride remained firm on her decision and returned with her family Sunday morning without getting married.
The bride’s mother has also filed a formal complaint at the police station, alleging a high dowry demand from the groom’s family. Authorities are investigating the allegations.
One of the woman’s relatives told ThePrint on the condition of anonymity that the situation became unresolvable by late night after what the groom had said about their family.
“When all efforts to mitigate the dispute failed, the family decided to pay the groom’s side whatever expense they had incurred in arranging the wedding. Once the payment was made, the family left the wedding venue,” the relative told ThePrint.
Vishal Sharma, vice president of the Hindustani Biradari, a social organisation, described the incident as a reflection of a broader environmental crisis.
“This is not just a social issue, it is a direct consequence of climate change. Heat is no longer just an inconvenience; it has become a force that determines the quality of life and relationships. An AC is no longer a luxury, it has become a necessity. There will be more such cases in the coming years if we do not take environmental disasters and extreme heat seriously,” he said.
