Agra: The police are yet to make any breakthrough more than a week after a woman was found murdered inside a mosque in Agra’s Tajganj area, barely 100 m away from the high-security Taj Mahal.

Alleging gang rape and murder, the woman’s family protested at the Tajganj police station to demand justice and swift action.

The face of the victim had been crushed beyond recognition while the dishevelled clothes suggested the possibility of sexual assault before being killed. The murder came to light when the people arrived for prayers at Lakdhara Masjid in the afternoon of 19 May.

Agra Commissioner J. Ravindra Gaur and Deputy Commissioner of Police Suraj Rai had rushed to the crime scene. The body was sent for autopsy, and the police formed multiple teams, including Special Operations Group (SOG) and Surveillance units, to expedite the probe.

The victim, a resident of Tajganj, was responsible for cleaning the mosque. A month before her murder, she had a dispute with another woman over cleanliness duties at the mosque, which police have noted in their investigation.

After scanning CCTV footage from around the mosque, a youth from Khairati Tola was detained for questioning. This led the police to another suspect, a young man studying at Agra College, who is also being interrogated. The police, however, are yet to make an official arrest.

“Many pieces of information have been gathered during our probe. We are continuing to investigate thoroughly,” DCP Suraj Rai said. “We have deployed several teams to uncover the truth behind this murder. Information has been obtained, and we are confident that the case will be resolved soon.”
