New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the deaths of three students at a civil services coaching centre in Delhi. The students were found drowned in the flooded basement library of the institute on 27 July.

The Commission has expressed serious concern over the incident and noted the negligence of the concerned authorities. The Commission has asked the government of Delhi, Municipal Corporation, and the law enforcement agencies to prepare a detailed report in the matter within two weeks. The report is expected to have detailed information about the number of such institutes and coaching centres in Delhi that are in violation of the prescribed norms.

The Commission has also sought information about the complaints pending against the concerned departments and the steps taken by the concerned department to address them. The Commission has asked the government to intimate the compensation paid to the next of kin of the deceased students as well as the steps taken or proposed to ensure that such tragic incidents do not recur.
