New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said in a statement that it has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report about girl students in Telangana being forced to use public toilets due to the lack of toilet facilities in the Devarakonda Zila Parishad High School for Girls.

Citing the report, the NHRC said girl students were initially forced to use the urinals at Sulabh complexes, but had to stop using them when asked to pay.

The girls were then forced to use free toilets at the Devarakonda Bus Stop, but the management of the school stopped them from using it.

The NHRC said it has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Telangana calling for a detailed report in four weeks.

Facility of toilets in schools for students, especially girl students, is one of the basic amenities that must be ensured and provided by the management, it said.
