To strengthen the capacity of forest officers to protect and promote human rights, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA) have jointly organised a four-day residential training programme, a PIB press release stated.
The programme, which will be held in Dehradun from 18 to 21 June, will focus on various aspects of human rights, including the rights of forest dwellers, Scheduled Tribes, and forest labourers, in the context of climate change. 31 senior officers from different States and Union Territories are participating in the programme.
The NHRC Secretary General, Bharat Lal, highlighted the importance of human rights and emphasised the need to build a strong foundation of human rights protection in the forest sector. He has urged the participants to fully internalise the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other relevant laws in order to better understand and appreciate human rights.
The Secretary General also emphasised the role of the UN Human Rights Council and the Universal Periodic Review in upholding the human rights of every human being. The IGNFA Director, Jagmohan Sharma, said that the proposed human rights module for the Indian Forest Service (IFS) probationers may be included in the Phase-II training programme for them.
The four-day training programme will also provide an opportunity to the participants to strengthen their knowledge and skills in human rights and laws related to the forests.
