NFR cancels 11 trains due to protests in Bihar, eight due to floods in Assam

(Eds: Adds details) Guwahati, Jun 17 (PTI) North East Frontier Railway (NFR) on Friday cancelled 11 trains due to violent protests in Bihar against Agnipath army recruitment scheme, and eight due to floods in Assam.

Six coaches of train number 15652 Guwahati–Jammu Tawi Lohit Express were set ablaze by agitators around 6.10 AM on Friday at Mohiuddinnagar railway station in Bihar, NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Sabyasachi De said here.

However, no injuries to any of the 1,169 passengers on board were reported, he said.

The trains Dibrugarh-Lalgarh Express, Kamakhya-Anand Vihar Express, Alipurduar Jn-Delhi Express, Kamakhya-Bhagat Ki Kothi Express, Katihar-Samastipur Jn, Patna Jn-Katihar Intercity Express and Katihar-Samastipur will remain cancelled on Friday.

Anand Vihar-Kamakhya Express and Delhi-Alipurduar Jn Express of June 19, Lalgarh-Dibrugarh Express of June 20 and Bhagat Ki Kothi-Kamakhya Express of June 21 will also remain cancelled.

NFR has also short terminated ten trains due to the protests, De said.

In Assam, due to damage to railway tracks by floodwaters between Nalbari and Ghograpar railway stations in Rangia division of NFR, trains have either been cancelled or diverted via Kamakhya-Goalpara Town-New Bongaigaon route.

Trains that have been diverted are Silchar-Trivandrum Express, Kamakhya-Delhi Brahmaputra Mail, Silghat Town-Tambaram Express, Silchar-Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express, Howrah-Dibrugarh Kamrup Express, Anand Vihar–Kamakhya Northeast Express and Chandigarh–Dibrugarh Express.

Silchar-Trivandrum Express will originate from Guwahati railway station.

New Bongaigaon-Guwahati passenger on Friday and its corresponding train from Guwahati; Alipurduar Jn-Guwahati Siffung Express and its corresponding train from Guwahati, and Alipurduar Jn-Lumding Intercity Express and the corresponding train from Lumding will remain cancelled on Saturday, De said.

NFR has also decided to operate two shuttle trains with open timings for convenience of short distance passengers between Guwahati and Rangia and New Bongaigaon and Barpeta Road, he said.

Meanwhile, Assam government has arranged for special flights between Guwahati and Silchar for people stranded due to the floods and landslides which have disrupted connectivity with Barak Valley.

The special flights, arranged by the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) in association with Fly Big, will start operating from June 18 at a fixed rate of Rs 4,000 per person, an official release said. PTI DG ACD ACD
