New Delhi meted out ‘step-motherly’ treatment to J-K: Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar, Oct 17 (PTI) Ruling National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said that New Delhi has meted out “step-motherly” treatment to Jammu and Kashmir.

“J-K has been subjected to step-motherly treatment by the BJP government. First, our special status was revoked without seeking the people’s consent and the historic state was demoted into two Union territories, while J-K’s statehood continues to remain in suspended animation,” Abdullah said in a statement here.

He said the people of J-K were assured in Parliament and before the Supreme Court that statehood would be restored soon after the elections.

“However, even two years after the elections, no progress has been made in this direction,” he said.

To make matters worse, the elected government of Jammu and Kashmir has been denied even the powers ordinarily available to a Union Territory government, the three-time chief minister said.

“The Lieutenant Governor’s administration leaves no opportunity to interfere in the functioning of the democratically elected government and create obstacles in its work,” he said.

Abdullah further said that in a democracy, there is no place for intimidation, coercion, harassment, fear, injustice, or the suppression of people’s voices, adding that the Constitution of India does not permit such actions either. PTI SSB MNK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
