Mumbai, Aug 27 (PTI) As many as 106 tourists from Nagpur who were stranded in flood-hit Nepal have safely left Kathmandu for Danapur in Bihar following Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s intervention, his office said on Thursday evening.
Earlier, the state Disaster Management Department had said that at least 114 persons from Maharashtra were stuck in the Himalayan nation, and 53 of them were confirmed safe.
Fadnavis called Nepal MP Sandeep Rana, who arranged four mini-buses to transport 106 persons from Kathmandu to Janakpur, the Chief Minister’s Office said, adding that they were expected to reach the Janakpur-Bihar border on Friday morning.
Buses have been arranged for their onward journey up to Danapur in Bihar, from where they would return by train, the statement said.
Fadnavis said earlier in the evening that the state government was in touch with those stranded in Nepal, and was working with the Centre to bring them back.
“There are some tourists who had travelled to Tibet. We established contact with them. Even my office is helping relatives of the stranded people. The Ministry of External Affairs is also there to help us. We are in talks with people as some of the tourists had gone to see Mansarovar and now their regular route to return is affected due to the floods. We are working on how to bring them back. We have spoken about it with the Union government,” Fadnavis said.
“The state does not have any exact figure of how many people are stranded there at present,” the Chief Minister said.
In the morning, the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) had said that 61 tourists from Maharashtra were visiting Nepal through a tour agency, Richa Tours Pvt Ltd, while the remaining were travelling independently.
Of the 114 stranded tourists, 53 were confirmed safe in the Saga Mansarovar area, according to the state Disaster Management Department.
The Disaster Management Department appealed to people to share information about their relatives or other persons stranded in Nepal through its helpline numbers 9321587143, 1070 and 022-22027990. The department has also set up a helpline desk and urged people to provide details to facilitate coordination and assistance.
The SEOC has provided a web-based link to collect information on stranded people and circulated it through the media, while district collectors have been asked to gather and verify details.
