Mumbai, Jul 24 (PTI) The Maharashtra government established a third zone in the Navi Mumbai police commissionerate, taking the number of such areas under deputy commissioners to three, an official said on Thursday.
The order to this effect was issued by the state home department on Wednesday following a proposal by the state director general of police’s office, he added.
“Currently, Navi Mumbai commissionerate had two zones, headed by DCPs, at Vashi (Zone 1) and Panvel (Zone 2). The new zone will also have two assistant commissioners of police. The city has a population of 58 lakh and is spread over 688 square kilometres. Considering the increased population, urbanisation, industrialisation, educational institutes and traffic situation, creation of one more zone was under consideration,” he said.
As the Navi Mumbai international airport is expected to be operational by the second half of this year, there is also a proposal to create an airport police station, the official said.
It will be functional soon, he added. PTI DC BNM
