Khandwa (MP) Apr 15 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar on Wednesday said the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will prove to be a milestone in increasing women’s participation in the decision-making process of legislative bodies.
He said that the Women’s Reservation Bill could not be passed in Parliament in the past due to political obstruction by certain individuals in previous governments.
Tomar, who was in Khandwa to attend an event, told reporters that the Women’s Reservation Bill was long overdue and there was no need to panic.
“Some people who always gave a political push to this bill, which is why it could not be passed in Parliament and become law,” he said.
Tomar said that this law (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam) came into existence due to the bold decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which will provide 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
“This law is a historic and important decision of this decade. It will prove to be a milestone in the future in increasing women’s participation in decision-making processes,” he added.
According to the draft Constitution amendment bill, which will be introduced and expected to be passed in the upcoming special sitting of Parliament, seats in Lok Sabha, state and UT assemblies to “operationalise” the women’s reservation law before the 2029 parliamentary polls, following a delimitation exercise to be carried out based on the last published census.
In September 2023, Parliament passed the ‘Women’s Reservation Act, commonly known as Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, marking a significant step towards enhancing women’s representation in legislative bodies.
The Act provided for the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
Amid criticism of the amendment bill by Congress, Tomar said women’s reservation and delimitation are not matters of politics.
“Delimitation is a prescribed process that has been taking place from time to time, regardless of the government,” he said.
Tomar congratulated Samrat Chaudhary, who took the oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar, and expressed confidence that the state will progress further under his leadership. PTI COR HWP MAS NSK
