Kohima, Sep 21 (PTI) Nagaland Roads and Bridges Minister G Kaito Aye on Monday called for greater unity and harmony among Nagas, urging the younger generation to rise above tribal differences and work together to strengthen society.
Addressing a cultural fiesta organised by the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) in Kohima on the theme “Together in Culture – Together in Harmony”, Aye said culture was an important part of Naga identity, and such initiatives should be sustained to promote greater understanding and interaction among different Naga communities.
“We may have a different history, but today we are Naga. Unless we become Naga, nothing will progress. We will become weaker again,” he said.
Aye appreciated the ASU initiative and said the message of unity should reach all parts of the state. He said Nagas must recognise and help one another and work together to improve their living conditions, irrespective of tribal differences.
Referring to the younger generation as the leaders of tomorrow, Aye urged students to focus on academic excellence and prepare themselves for different opportunities in life.
He said education should be their “first weapon” and advised them not to be discouraged by uncertainties over employment.
The minister also urged the youth to help address social problems, particularly alcoholism and drug abuse, and cautioned them against allowing technology to become a source of addiction.
Aye called on students to point out specific shortcomings in government functioning so that corrective measures could be taken, while stressing the need for constructive engagement with the system.
He said togetherness must be accompanied by harmony, which required people to maintain a peaceful atmosphere, understand one another and share their problems.
“Unity comes through harmony only, through peace only,” he said.
Angami Public Organisation president Thejao Vihienuo said the fiesta was a celebration of Naga identity and the richness and diversity of its culture.
He urged the young participants to celebrate their traditions with pride and respect for one another and use the occasion to expand their circle of friendship.
ASU president Diezevisie Nakhro said the fiesta was organised to appreciate the diverse traditions, talents and cultures of the Naga people and strengthen unity.
He said the ASU had been planning the event since last year and expressed gratitude to the tribal student bodies for supporting the initiative.
The occasion brought together student bodies representing the 17 Naga tribes, showcasing their respective cultures and traditions and providing a platform for cultural exchange and interaction among the youth. PTI NBS NN
