Mumbai, Sep 29 (PTI) Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance on Tuesday decided to contest together the Maharashtra legislative council elections for a total of five Teachers’ and Graduates’ constituencies scheduled to be held next month.
The meeting to review the political situation and work out a consensus was held at the Y B Chavan Centre in Mumbai and attended by senior Congress leader Naseem Khan, NCP (SP) leaders Shashikant Shinde and Harshwardhan Patil, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut.
Polling for these five seats will be held on October 23.
Talking to PTI, Naseem Khan said the Congress has its sitting MLCs – Abhijit Wanzari in Nagpur Graduates’ constituency and Jayant Asgaonkar in Pune Teachers’ constituency.
“We held talks for the remaining seats – Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (previously Aurangabad) Graduates’ held by the NCP, Pune Graduates’ held by NCP (SP), Amravati Teachers’ held by an independent. A decision will be taken based on winning criteria,” he said.
Apart from Wanzari and Asgaonkar, three other members — NCP’s Satish Chavan from the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates’ constituency, Arun Lad of the NCP (SP) from the Pune Graduates’ constituency and Kiran Sarnaik of the Shiv Sena from the Amravati Teachers’ constituency — are retiring on December 6.
The notification for the council polls was issued on Tuesday. The last date of filing of nominations is October 6 and the last date of their withdrawal is October 9. PTI MR NP
