Mumbai, Sep 20 (PTI) The Maharashtra government on Friday postponed till further orders Mumbai University senate polls scheduled for September 22, the move prompting strident criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray.
An official statement said the graduates senate elections were temporarily stayed by the state government under Rule 8 (7) of Maharashtra Public Universities Act.
It just shows how scared the BJP and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde are of the Yuva Sena, the youth wing of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Thackeray claimed.
“The gaddar (traitors) gang led by CM Shinde is so scared of elections that they order cancelation of the Mumbai university senate elections a day before the voting. This is a farce and for the world to see what they have done to democracy,” he further said.
Hitting out at the ruling alliance, Thackeray said these parties talk of ‘one nation, one poll’ but are afraid of elections.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the Mumbai unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a students body affiliated to the BJP, claimed the university administration stayed the polls under pressure from CM Shinde.
“Democracy has been made a victim. The failure of the university to hold fair elections is an insult to the graduates,” ABVP’s Konkan region chief Sankalp Phaldesai said. PTI MR BNM
