Aizawl, May 4 (PTI) Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga on Monday asserted that his party’s resilience is rooted in divine appointment rather than political or material strength.
Addressing a function at the MNF office here, Zoramthanga said that the party was established by God to serve Him and spread the Gospel, and has been guided by divine purpose for over six decades.
“For over 60 years, God has guided us, and He often uses our weaknesses as a means for us to learn and reflect. To uplift the MNF, God has taught us lessons through our past experiences,” the former chief minister said.
Zoramthanga’s assertion came days after the party lost the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) polls to ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM).
Reaffirming the party’s spiritual foundation, he said, “The MNF does not put its trust in the strength of horses, nor do we boast in chariots,” echoing a Biblical scripture.
Zoramthanga highlighted the party’s role in initiating reforms in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), claiming that its efforts laid the groundwork for positive change despite creating difficulties.
He, however, argued that these developments had also led to internal strains within the party, leading to political repercussions.
Hitting out at ZPM, the MNF chief said that since the party has not governed the AMC for even a single day, it is perceived by the public as a “pure virgin.” He said that ZPM holds significant influence across Aizawl constituencies and has been intensifying efforts to secure electoral gains, particularly during election periods.
“Almost all constituencies in Aizawl fall under ZPM influence, with many also represented by ministers. Despite past weaknesses, ZPM has been making strong efforts to achieve electoral success, working intensively during election periods to win public support,” he said.
Zoramthanga further alleged that the present ZPM administration, headed by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, refused to release funds to the previous MNF-led AMC, which hindered the party’s functioning in local administration.
He said that God credits the party’s concern for Mizoram and its people as righteousness, and it will move forward without fear.
In the AMC polls held on April 21, the ZPM won 17 out of 19 seats, while the MNF and Congress bagged 1 each. PTI CORR RG
