Hamirpur (HP), Apr 14 (PTI) An elderly man, who went missing since last month from Himachal’s Hamirpur district, was found dead in a deep drain near his home, police said on Tuesday.

Upon receiving the information on Monday, the police reached the spot and sent the body for a post-mortem, which was later handed over to his family members. The family has not expressed suspicion against anyone, they said.

Bansi Ram, 85, son of the late Mahant Ram, who worked as a daily wage labourer in the Sujanpur market, did not return home on March 22. Despite an extensive search by his family, no trace of him could be found, leading to the filing of a missing person complaint at the Sujanpur Police Station, they added.

The police alerted neighbouring police stations and scoured CCTV footage, but their efforts yielded no results.

However, on Monday, some villagers informed the family that a towel was visible near the Toru drain. The family members reached the location and identified the towel, which belonged to Bansi Ram.

Subsequently, they descended into the drain along with local residents to conduct a search. Approximately 500 meters down the deep drain, a decomposed body was discovered, which the family members identified.

Preliminary investigations suggest the incident likely occurred due to a slip.

Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Rakesh Kumar said, prima facie, it appears to be an accidental death caused by slipping. The police have registered a case and further investigations are underway, he added. PTI COR BPL SHS
