Bengaluru, Jun 18 (PTI) Minister for Greater Bengaluru Development Krishna Byre Gowda on Thursday directed the municipal officers to effectively utilise the existing system to address the city’s garbage problem.
The minister held a review meeting on the measures being undertaken by the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited within the jurisdiction of the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
Later, in a statement, he said that the garbage problem has become one of the most frequently discussed issues in the city. Several directions have been issued to officials with a view to finding a permanent solution to the problem.
A new tender process for waste collection in the city is currently underway, he said, adding that tenders have been invited for 33 packages, of which six are under litigation.
The remaining 27 packages are in the final stages. Until the new system is implemented, officials have been instructed to introduce necessary improvements within the existing system to bring the garbage problem under control, he said.
The minister noted that while some areas face a shortage of vehicles for waste collection and disposal, others suffer from a shortage of staff.
The vehicles currently being used for waste disposal do not have GPS systems. Some contractors have continued with poor practices and, for several years, have been filing court cases that have hindered the implementation of the new tender process. Measures have now been taken to curb such issues, he added.
The minister said that the municipal commissioner, engineers and senior officers have been instructed to conduct field inspections to monitor the attendance and functioning of garbage collection vehicles and staff.
Under the new tender for 33 waste-management packages, installation of Geo Positioning System (GPS) devices in all vehicles will be mandatory. No payments will be made to vehicles that do not have GPS systems, Gowda said. PTI GMS GMS ADB
