Shillong, Apr 16 (PTI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday reviewed plans to diversify the Public Distribution System (PDS) and roll out a nutrition kit scheme, aimed at improving the health of pregnant women and newborns.
Chairing a meeting with officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department, the CM said the proposed initiatives are aligned with the state’s ‘Mission 1,000 Days’ programme, which focuses on ensuring proper nutrition and healthcare for mothers and children during the critical period, from conception to a child’s second birthday.
Sangma said the government is working to introduce a wider range of nutritious and locally sourced food items through the PDS so that families not only have access to food, but also benefit from healthier and more balanced diets.
“The proposed Meghalaya Nutrition Kit Scheme is aimed at supplementing the nutritional needs of expecting mothers and supporting healthier babies right from conception,” he said.
The initiative, he added, reinforces the government’s commitment to strengthening food security while prioritising maternal and child nutrition across the state. PTI JOP SOM
