New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) The MCD on Thursday flagged off 176 electric sanitation vehicles for five wards in south Delhi, nearly tripling the number of primary waste collection vehicles in the areas and aiming to increase waste collection capacity by around 2.5 times, officials said.
The vehicles were deployed in Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Green Park, Greater Kailash and Chittaranjan Park wards in the South Zone, an official statement said.
Of the 176 vehicles, 150 are for primary waste collection, including 112 tippers and 38 e-rickshaws/three-wheelers, while the remaining 26 are secondary vehicles, including refuse collectors, hook loaders, Tata-407 vehicles, JCBs and Bobcats, the statement read.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said the five wards currently have an average of around 10 primary collection vehicles each, which will rise to around 30 with the new deployment. It said this is expected to improve the frequency and coverage of door-to-door garbage collection and reduce waste accumulation at vulnerable locations.
The deployment comes as South Delhi MSW Solutions Private Limited, a special-purpose vehicle of Renvion Solutions, announced the commencement of integrated municipal solid waste collection and transportation operations across the entire South Zone.
According to the company’s statement, the project covers all 23 wards spread across nearly 190 sq km and is designed to handle about 1,400 tonnes of waste daily. It includes door-to-door collection, as well as transportation of street-sweeping waste, drain silt, horticulture waste and domestic hazardous waste, including sanitary waste.
The company said the project will eventually deploy 550 electric four-wheelers and 226 electric three-wheelers as part of what it described as Delhi’s first large-scale zero-emission primary and secondary waste collection fleet.
The system will also use GPS tracking, RFID tagging, weighbridge-based weighment and real-time monitoring through a state Command and Control Centre. Sixty fixed compactor transfer stations are planned as part of the secondary collection network, it said. PTI MSJ PRK
