Gurugram, Apr 26 (PTI) A massive fire broke out at a plastic factory and warehouse in Gurugram’s Bajghera area on Sunday and spread to nearby units, prompting evacuation of surrounding areas, officials said.

The blaze was discovered around 5 am, when factory workers noticed the fire and initially tried to douse it before alerting the fire brigade and police as the flames spread, they said.

Half a dozen fire tenders were rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after nearly four hours of firefighting, according to officials.

Police evacuated the surrounding area as a precaution, while thick smoke from the blaze triggered panic in six nearby residential societies.

The fire also spread to two wood warehouses located near the affected factory and warehouse.

Fire officials said the exact cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained, though a short circuit or spark is suspected.

“Most of the factories in the area are scrap crushers where iron and plastic scrap is processed. The presence of plastic material made firefighting difficult, but the blaze was brought under control,” a fire department official said. Fire officer Narendra Kumar said no person or animal was trapped in the fire. PTI COR PRK
