Pratapgarh, Oct 17 (PTI) A 40-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband following a dispute at their home in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district on Saturday, police said.

The accused, Ajay Kumar Yadav, was taken into custody after he allegedly confessed to the crime during questioning, Additional Superintendent of Police (East) Alok Kumar said.

The incident took place in Pat Hatiya Kala village under the Phatanpur police station area.

According to police, Yadav initially claimed that masked men had entered the house to commit robbery and attacked his wife, Manju Devi, on the head with a heavy object, killing her.

However, police grew suspicious after he repeatedly changed his statements.

During questioning, he allegedly admitted to killing his wife, Kumar said.

The officer said Yadav was addicted to alcohol and the couple frequently quarrelled over the issue. During a dispute early Saturday, he allegedly struck Manju on the head with a heavy object, causing her death.

The woman’s body has been sent for postmortem examination. Further investigation is underway, police said. PTI COR CDN NB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
