New Delhi, Mar 16 (PTI) A man allegedly strangled his elderly mother to death as she was in “agony” after taking an overdose of hypertension pills to kill herself in Dwarka here, police said on Thursday.

The man too tried to end his life but could not succeed, they added.

Police said the mother-son duo was in extreme financial distress and had planned suicide.

On Tuesday at around 6.33 pm, an incident of alleged suicide was reported from Himalaya Apartment, Sector-22, Dwarka, they said.

When police reached the spot, they found a 65-year-old woman lying dead on a bed with bruises on her neck and blood oozing from her nose. Seven empty packets of tablets were also found in a drawing room while a suicide note was fixed found on a wall, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dwarka, M Harsha Vardhan said.

He said the deceased woman was identified as Basabi Biswas.

As police grew suspicious, a detailed investigation was undertaken. The woman’s son Anirban Biswas told the police that his mother took 70 tablets of hypertension around 10 pm Monday, and on Tuesday morning she was in agony, the DCP said.

The man then took a necktie and strangled his mother to death. After that, he allegedly tried to kill himself by hanging but could not succeed, Vardhan said.

A case of murder was registered and accused Anirban was arrested, he said.

The woman and her son were in extreme financial distress since the death of her husband. According to the man, they both had planned suicide, police said. PTI NIT NIT AQS AQS
