Mumbai, Aug 25 (PTI) A 22-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly threw eggs at a Ganesh idol procession at Mazgaon in south Mumbai, with police saying he was angered by firecrackers being burst outside a housing society.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena said the accused, identified as Danish Sher Khan, used to take online orders for egg deliveries.
On the day of the incident, Khan, a delivery person, had gone to deliver an order at the Continental Heights building in Mazgaon. However, smoke resulting from the firecrackers outside the society caused irritation in his eyes, leaving him unable to walk properly, the official said.
In a fit of rage, he allegedly threw eggs at the Ganesh procession, police said.
A case was registered at the Byculla police station on Monday against an unidentified person after an egg allegedly landed on the Ganesh idol of ‘Mazgaoncha Morya Ganeshotsav Mandal’ while it was being taken to a pandal late Sunday night.
The eggs were allegedly thrown from an upper floor of the Continental Heights building, following which tension gripped the area and a brief gathering took place outside the building. Police intervened and deployed additional personnel to bring the situation under control.
Five special teams were formed to trace the accused. With the help of technical evidence, police identified and arrested Khan, DCP Meena said.
He was arrested nearly 36 hours after the incident, the police said.
Khan was booked under sections 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 196 (promoting enmity between different groups and acts prejudicial to maintenance of communal harmony) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation was underway, they said.
