Man held for sexual assault attempt on mentally disabled minor in Kochi

Kochi, May 10 (PTI) An Uttar Pradesh man was arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a mentally disabled minor at her residence in Angamaly here, police said on Sunday.

According to police, the accused, Rajesh, had been residing at Angamaly Railway Station and was employed as a local labourer.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon when the accused barged into the house of the 16-year-old victim and attempted to sexually assault her, police said.

At the time, the victim was alone at the house, officials said.

Neighbours who heard the girl’s screams rushed to the spot, rescued her, and detained the accused until the police arrived, officials said.

Officers subsequently took Rajesh into custody and formally recorded his arrest after registering a case.

Police officials stated that they are currently verifying the suspect’s background and checking for any prior criminal record in his home state.

The accused was produced before a local court and has been remanded to judicial custody. PTI TBA TBA KH
