Haveri (Karnataka), Aug 21 (PTI) A 31-year-old man was arrested for allegedly desecrating a temple in this district, police said on Friday.

The incident occurred in Shiggaon town of on Thursday night around 9.30 pm, following which Hindu organisations staged a protest, they said.

According to police, Mohammad Jaffer allegedly entered the Anjaneya temple and later urinated within its premises.

He was allegedly caught by locals, who questioned him about the act.

The incident triggered protests by Hindu organisations and the matter was brought under control by the police.

Police also stepped up security to ensure no untoward incident occurred in the area.

A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and he was arrested in connection with the incident.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that Jaffer would often sleep in the vicinity of the temple premises earlier but no one has ever objected to it before, police said, adding that further investigation is underway to ascertain the reason behind his act. PTI AMP ROH
