Idukki (Keralam), Sep 26 (PTI) A man died and three others were injured when the car they were travelling in crashed through a bridge railing and plunged into a river at Elappara here, police said on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Abhishek S Nair (27), a native of Adoor in Pathanamthitta district.
According to preliminary information, Abhishek, his wife Kavya and their friends Abhiram and Afsa had arrived at a resort in Kuttikkanam for a tour.
Their friends were staying at another resort in Karintharuvi, and the four were travelling there when the accident occurred, police said.
CCTV footage showed the car approaching the bridge at high speed before crashing through the railing and plunging into the river at Fourth Mile in Elappara around 10 pm on Friday, police said.
Local residents initially carried out the rescue operation and pulled the three injured occupants from the vehicle.
Nair was dead by the time he was brought out of the car, police said.
Kavya, Abhiram and Afsa were taken to Peermade hospital, where their injuries were not considered critical, police said.
Police said the exact cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained.
They said a preliminary possibility was that Abhishek may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Police have registered a case in connection with the incident, and the body will be handed over to the relatives after postmortem. PTI TBA SSK
