Gurugram: Two men were thrashed by a mob in Haryana’s Palwal Friday on suspicion that they were transporting cows for slaughter, with one succumbing to his injuries during treatment a day later. The deceased was identified as Yusuf, a resident of Bhudpur.

On Saturday, the Haryana Police registered a case of cow smuggling against Yusuf and one Ravi, while late on Sunday, a murder case was registered against 10 unidentified individuals based on a complaint from Yusuf’s family.

The first FIR was lodged under sections of the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act 2015 on the basis of a complaint filed by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Rajinder Singh. It said the police received a call Friday reporting that a group of people had stopped a vehicle near Aurangabad village and found three cows inside.

It was reported that a crowd was assaulting the suspects and action was required at the scene. “One Ravi was driving the vehicle, while Yusuf was monitoring it on a bike. The crowd caught both men and started beating them,” states the FIR.

Ravi sustained minor injuries, but Yusuf’s condition was critical. Yusuf was subjected to more severe beating, police sources said.

Policemen, the sources added, rescued the two men from the mob. Yusuf was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, and the doctors referred him to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after initial treatment.

“Acting on information, I, ASI Rajinder, along with constable Jhulbihari, in the government vehicle, driven by Rohitash, reached the Aurangabad-Mitrol bus stop. Upon arrival, we found a large crowd gathered around a motorcycle and a small commercial vehicle (“Chhota Hathi”). Upon inquiry, the driver of the Chhota Hathi, bearing registration number HR73B8962, identified himself as Ravi, son of Premchand, a resident of Dighot, Palwal district,” states the FIR.

“The motorcycle driver, with registration number HR52F4837 (Splendor), identified himself as Yusuf, son of Khutta, a resident of Bhudpur, Hathin, Palwal district,” it adds.

The ASI states in the FIR that Yusuf admitted he was riding ahead on the motorcycle to scout the route and ensure safe passage for the vehicle carrying the animals to Rajasthan.

Upon checking the vehicle, two cows and a calf were found inside in a cruelly restrained condition, with their mouths and legs tied with ropes, states the ASI.

When asked for receipts or documents for the animals, neither Ravi nor Yusuf could produce any, the FIR further said.

The ASI states in his complaint that both suspects admitted to illegally transporting cows for the purpose of slaughter. Ravi told the police that they intended to take the cows to Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi after first bringing them to Bhudpur.

“Yusuf was riding ahead on the motorcycle to monitor any potential risks or threats. However, a crowd in Aurangabad village intercepted them and began assaulting both suspects,” the ASI states.

Regarding the mob action, the police had initially registered a case of assault. However, after Yusuf died during treatment, his family Sunday brought his body to Mundkati police station and demanded the arrest of those who had thrashed him. They also staged a protest.

Upon receiving information about the protest, Hodal Deputy Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Kumar arrived at the scene and assured the family of swift action against the accused, after which the family left with Yusuf’s body.

On Sunday night, the police added murder charges against 10 unidentified individuals against whom the assault case had been registered earlier.

Chander Mohan, Palwal superintendent of police, told ThePrint that police teams have been formed to apprehend the culprits.

  1. Haryana – a state where women and minorities are unsafe but cows are safe. Where people value the life of a cow more than the life of a fellow human being. A state where the youth are forever ready to kill and maim a human being just on the suspicion of cow slaughter.
It indeed is a cesspool. What is shameful is that it is right next to Delhi, the national capital.
