Dehradun, Aug 26 (PTI) A man died while crossing a swollen river in Pithoragarh and an 18-year-old youth went missing after being swept away by the strong current of the Ganga in Haridwar on Wednesday, officials said.
According to the latest report from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Bhagwan Singh (42), a resident of Dunakot village in the Didihat area of Pithoragarh district, was heading to his field along the Rotis River in the morning to chase away monkeys when he was caught in the strong current while crossing the river and swept away.
Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams reached the spot after receiving information and launched a search operation. Singh’s body was subsequently recovered from the river.
In another incident, 18-year-old Deepu, a resident of Kankhal in Haridwar, was swept away by the strong current of the Ganga near ‘Lovers Point’ close to Bairagi Camp in the evening. He slipped while bathing in the river and went missing.
Rescue and relief teams are searching for Deepu, but he has not yet been found.
Light to moderate rainfall was recorded at some places in the state on Wednesday. The Meteorological Centre has forecast light to moderate rain at many places in the mountainous districts on Thursday.
