New Delhi, Sep 25 (PTI) The Congress on Friday claimed that the Modi government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative has “significantly belied” hopes and expectations, with the private investment boom not happening and broad-based job growth missing.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a thread on X which claimed that both the Gross Value Added as well as the Index of Industrial Production — old and new series — show that growth in the manufacturing sector has more often than not been slower than the overall growth in the last 12 years and so, any extra ‘Make in India’ bump isn’t yet visible.

Sharing the long thread on the performance of ‘Make in India’, Ramesh said, “This is a very educative and data-rich thread that clearly shows that the much-hyped Make in India has significantly belied hopes and expectations.”

“The private investment boom has not happened. Broad-based jobs growth has been missing,” he said.

The Congress leader’s remarks came as the ‘Make in India’ initiative completed 12 years.

‘Make in India’ was launched on September 25, 2014, to facilitate investment, foster innovation, build best-in-class infrastructure, and make India a hub for manufacturing, design and innovation. PTI ASK DIV

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
