Thane, Jul 24 (PTI) A majority of those employed in 3500 small scale industries in Navi Mumbai and its surrounding areas are “migrants”, a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader said on Thursday.

The state government must carry out an audit of these firms to determine the number of “Marathi speaking” employees, said MNS’ Navi Mumbai city unit president Gajanan Kale.

“While the state government has made it compulsory to employ at least 80 percent locals, the rule is not being followed. The MNS has been raising this issue regularly,” he told reporters.

He also expressed concern over a Vashi collegian getting beaten up for asking a group of persons to converse with him in Marathi.

“The Marathi versus non-Marathi issue is now making its presence felt in colleges as well. The state government must pay attention to this critical issue,” he added. PTI COR BNM
