Mumbai, Jul 10 (PTI) The Maharashtra government has made fire audits and safety measures mandatory for all factories, Labour Minister Akash Fundkar said in the assembly on Thursday.
Responding to a question raised by MLAs Nana Patole, Saroj Ahire, Rajesh Bakane, Amit Deshmukh and Ram Kadam in the wake of a fire at the Jindal Polyfilms factory in Mundegaon in Nashik district, he said a special study group has been constituted to investigate the incident and recommend preventive steps.
“Based on the report of the study group, strict action will be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” Fundkar said.
He informed the House that this is the second fire in two-and-half years at Jindal Polyfilms plant.
However, considering the employment of thousands of workers, the factory will not be shut down completely, he asserted.
Instead, the affected section has been closed immediately, and necessary repairs and safety upgrades have been instructed, Fundkar said.
“No factory in Maharashtra is granted a licence without conducting a fire audit. Regular fire drills and inspections are carried out using the Central Inspection System (CIS) to ensure compliance. The state government has implemented stringent safety norms to protect the lives of factory workers, and enforcement of these rules is being carried out more effectively,” Fundkar added. PTI MR BNM
