Mumbai, Oct 21 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate three flyovers near Sion and Vidyavihar railway stations and on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road in Mumbai on Thursday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
The inauguration will be held virtually at 1 pm in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, and the programme will be livestreamed at the three locations, the civic body said in a release.
The three projects aim to improve east-west connectivity, reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion at key city junctions, it said.
Of the three bridges, two are east-west connecting railway overbridges, while the third bypasses busy junctions at Goregaon East as part of the GMLR project undertaken to reduce the travel time between Mumbai’s Eastern and Western suburbs.
According to the release, the reconstructed Sion railway overbridge, built after demolishing the British era bridge, will facilitate the planned construction of the fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2).
The 112-year-old bridge was declared unsafe in 2019, necessitating its reconstruction, the civic body said.
The civic body claimed the new bridge will provide additional space for railway lines, helping improve suburban and long-distance train operations.
The project, originally scheduled for completion in February 2027, has been completed four months ahead of schedule.
According to the BMC, the Vidyavihar flyover, constructed at Vidyavihar railway station, will connect Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg in the east with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in the west. It is expected to reduce the travel time between the two sides from around 30 minutes to 10 minutes and ease congestion on the existing flyover near Ghatkopar railway station.
The third flyover, measuring 1.26 km, has been constructed near the Hotel Ratnagiri junction in Goregaon East as part of the GMLR project. It connects General Arun Kumar Vaidya Marg with the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Road near Santosh Nagar.
The flyover is expected to ease traffic congestion around Dindoshi court, Hotel Ratnagiri junction and Valbhat River junction, while improving connectivity as part of the larger east-west corridor linking the Eastern and Western Express Highways through twin tunnels, the BMC said. PTI KK NP
